Classic Parts of America: 1968-1974 Chevy Nova Parts Catalog

CLASSIC PARTS OF AMERICA

WHAT YEAR IS IT? Listed below is a breakdown of changes made to the Nova between 1968 and 1974. Use this list along with the Vin plate identification chart below to figure out your year. 1968 - A new model based on a Camaro-like frame. This basic body design lasted for 11 years and would be shared in one form or another by all other GM divisions. All models became known as the Chevy II Nova. The 350 and 396 became available. 1969 - The Chevy II name was dropped - all models referred to as just "Nova". Coupes and sedans were of the same body. Headrests were installed, and the ignition switch moved from the dashboard to the steering column. 1970 - This model continued on with taillight, sidemarker and other minor changes. 1971 - This year meant low-compression engines so they can be made to run on the lower octane unleaded gas. The 396 is now gone. No more big-blocks in the Nova. This was also the last year for the 12 bolt. 1972 - This year was pretty much the same. A trim package known as "Rally Nova" was available. "SS" meant nothing more than a "trim and beauty package" 1973 - Phase 1 of federal bumper requirements (leading up to 5MPH the following year) & added emission equipment meant performance engines were history and lower horsepower prevailed. 1974 - The body remains unchanged since 1973 except for the 5 MPH bumpers. New "features" include ignition seat belt interlocks. This prevented the car from being started if anyone was sitting in the driver's or passenger's seats without the seat belt buckled.
